Foreign director shoots Malayalam film in Neyyattinkara / September 23, 2018
NEYYATTINKARA, Kerala, September 23, 2018 - Outcast Cinemas, Kerala's most innovative independent film production house, will shortly commence principal photography on its short film “In the Field” on location in Neyyattinkara.
On the 27th of September, Outcast Cinemas will commence principal photography on its short film production “In the Field.” The story of a father and son meeting in the most unlikely of circumstances, “In the Field,” stars P Balachandran and Dhanil Krishna in the lead roles and is written and directed Outcast by co-founder Julian Coldrey, an Australian.
“Since living in India, I’ve been fascinated by Malayalam film” says Julian Coldrey. “I remember watching classic films like Mohanlal’s Thoovanathumbikal and being captivated by the sophistication and daring themes of Malayalam cinema. It has strong parallels to the European art cinema I grew up with, being often character-driven and grounded in the realities of everyday life. Making Malayalam films has long been a goal for me.”
The challenges for a foreigner to make a film in Malayalam are many, but the Malayalam film industry is a welcoming one. Says Julian Coldrey: “I’m so lucky to have found great collaborators to work with. Lead actors P Balachandran and Dhanil Krishna have contributed so many great ideas, as has my director of photography Prijith SB. And of course Outcast co-founder Vincent Mukkadan is a creative and production star in his own right. Without them, I could not have done this.”
“In the Field” will be released initially on the international film festival circuit. This is a deliberate choice on the part of Outcast Cinemas to build support for Malayalam films on a global scale. “Malayalam films remain vastly underappreciated in the global context. We want to change that” says Vincent Mukkadan, Outcast Cinemas Creative Director. “We hope to create a generation of film lovers worldwide who value and seek out quality Malayalam films. That is our goal.”

As part of its mission to develop fresh talent in the Malayalam film industry, Outcast Cinemas has optioned a brilliant new screenplay by first-time screenwriting talent Balu George.

KOCHI, Kerala, 1 July 2018 - Outcast Cinemas, Kerala's newest independent film production house, has launched in Kochi, Kerala. Founded by media veterans Vincent Mukkadan and Julian Coldrey, Outcast Cinemas brings a focus on fresh talent to its production activities.
The Malayalam film industry’s heritage and quality are well known in India and abroad. One of the many remarkable things about the Malayalam industry is the amount of fresh talent it continues to produce.
With this in mind, Kerala’s newest independent film production house, Outcast Cinemas, launches this month in Kochi. A key goal of its founders, Vincent Mukkadan and Julian Coldrey, is to tap into this rich vein of emerging on- and off-screen talent.
“Viral hits like ‘Manikya Malaraya Poovi’ from 'Oru Adaar Love' prove that Malayalee audiences have a strong appetite for new faces, as well as the heroes we all know and love," says Outcast Cinemas co-founder Vincent Mukkadan. "A strong pool of new talent helps the industry to grow and improve, and I'm passionate about being part of that process," he says.
Outcast Cinemas commits to providing opportunities for new artists in all of its productions, from technical roles through to on-screen talent. "In that way," says co-founder Julian Coldrey, "we can live up to our vision of enriching the lives of both artists and audiences through the creation of beautiful Malayalam films. We want to ensure our work contributes to the ongoing vitality of the film industry here in Kerala."
With two films entering principal photography in 2018 and several more projects in script development, Outcast Cinemas is poised to become an energetic new player in the Malayalam film industry.
